Surrey’s Community Recycling Centres (CRCs) to start accepting more types of waste.

From Monday 1 June, residents will be able to take more types of waste to Surrey’s community recycling centres.

Ten of Surrey’s CRCs were reopened on 11 May, but only for black bag waste and garden waste. From 1 June more materials, including wood, scrap metal, small electronics and white goods, will be accepted once again.

The full list of what can be taken will be available from 1 June on the Surrey County Council website or by calling 03456 009 009.

Unfortunately, the sites won’t be able to accept chargeable waste (soil, rubble, plasterboard or tyres), as staff are unable to safely process payments, or textiles, as reprocessors are not currently able to take it.

Whilst we offer this essential service to residents, it is important we maintain social distancing measures for the safety and wellbeing of staff and visitors to the sites. There will be clearly marked walkways and only one person will be able to be on the gantries to access the containers at any time.

As a result of the social distancing measures, the number of people allowed on the site at any one time will be limited. It’s expected that only a quarter of cars will be able to pass through the sites, compared to the typical peak time visitor levels at this time of year. Therefore, queues are expected and people should only visit the CRC if it’s essential. If you do travel to the CRCs, please follow instructions from traffic marshals.

Natalie Bramhall, Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change, said: “Thank you to all the residents who have passed through our CRCs recently for their understanding of the measures in place and for their gratitude to site staff. Accepting two types of waste has helped residents to clear the black bag waste and garden waste they will have been holding onto while the sites were closed.

“Following the successful re-opening of the sites, I’m pleased that we can now start to move to accepting more materials. But that means demand to access the sites will increase while capacity on site still needs to be limited. Please don’t come to a CRC unless you need to and be patient when queueing.”

Over the past few weeks, the CRCs have operated with extended opening hours in order to manage demand from residents. Over the coming weeks, the sites will transition back to standard opening hours. This means that from 1 June, all sites that are currently operating, except Farnham and Camberley, will be open from 8am to 5pm. Farnham and Camberley will be open from 8am to 4pm. Then, from Monday 8 June, all ten sites that are currently operating will be open from 8am to 4pm.

The five smaller sites that are currently closed will remain closed for the time-being as it is not possible to safely open them with social distancing measures in place. We will continue to review this and open them when it is possible to do so. The five sites are Bagshot, Caterham, Cranleigh, Dorking and Warlingham.

Residents using a van, pick-up or trailer will be able to visit the sites again from Monday 1 June, but will still need a van permit, as usual. Due to social distancing measures, staff will not be able to assist you in unloading your vehicle, this includes white goods. So please only bring to site what you can carry yourself.

Unfortunately, the Revive re-use shops remain closed at this time and the sites do not have capacity to store items for re-use, so please hold onto these at home for the time-being.

EARLIER ANNOUNCEMENT (15TH MAY 2020)

Residents have been thanked for their patience and support for staff after 10 of Surrey’s community recycling centres reopened this week.

There has been a steady stream of visitors to the sites since they reopened on Monday, with up to 100 cars an hour passing through the busiest CRCs in Camberley and Shepperton.

And while initial queues have been clearing, the sites are still expected to be very busy over the weekend.

To support social distancing, numbers of people who can be on each site at a time have been reduced. But to help residents pass through the sites quickly, they can only take black bag waste and garden waste. Opening hours have also been temporarily extended.

Residents should check for the latest information before they travel at surreycc.gov.uk/recyclingg or by calling 03456 009 009.

Mike Goodman, Cabinet Member for Environment and Waste, said: “I would like to thank residents for their patience when they’ve had to queue, and for the gratitude they’ve shown to site staff since our CRCs reopened.

“We’ve had to balance the importance of social distancing to protect staff and visitors, with the need to help residents clear the backlog of waste. The numbers of visitors who have successfully passed through our CRCs is as a result of the hard work of staff at both the council and our contractor Suez.”

The smallest CRCs in Bagshot, Caterham, Cranleigh, Dorking and Warlingham remain closed. This is because these sites can’t operate safely and ensure social distancing between visitors and staff.

Work is continuing on how to start returning the CRCs to a near-normal service.

Mike Goodman continued: “We know residents are still holding onto waste and recycling, and we’re looking at ways we can start accepting all materials again. Social distancing is likely to be a factor for some time, so the safety of visitors and staff will continue to be our priority.”

Until then, residents can only take black bag waste and garden waste. Please don’t take any other waste to the sites as you will be turned away.

Social distancing
It is important we maintain social distancing measures for the safety and wellbeing of staff and visitors to the sites.

Staff will not be able to assist you in unloading your vehicle. So please only bring to site what you can carry yourself.

Reuse shops
The Revive reuse shops remain closed.

MAY 202O RULES ( SEE ABOVE FOR 1 JUNE 2020 ONWARDS)

  • Pedestrians cannot walk into any of the CRCs
  • Once parked you will have access to only two containers (one for black bag waste and one for garden waste).
  • Once you have disposed your waste you will need to leave by the exit.

What Waste & Recycling You Can Bring
During the first reopening phase, residents can only bring black bag waste and garden waste. No other waste can be accepted at this time, and the reuse shops are staying closed.

Residents are asked to hold onto other materials they need to take to CRCs, such as card, wood, metal, electrical and construction waste. The intention is to move to a second reopening phase after a few weeks when the full range of materials can be accepted, but only when it is safe to do. We will continue to only allow reduced numbers on sites to maintain social distancing.

Site Rules

  • Staff and visitors must adhere to the 2m social distancing rules at all times.
  • Only one person will be permitted outside their vehicle whilst on site. People must remain in their vehicle whilst queuing.
  • Site staff will not be able to help you move your waste, so please only bring what one person can safely carry.
  • You must not come to the site if you are self-isolating because you or a member of your household has or has had symptoms of COVID-19.
  • If you or anyone in your household has had COVID-19 symptoms, your waste must be double bagged and only brought to the site after being left for 72 hours.
  • During the first reopening phase only black bag waste and garden waste will be accepted; limiting to two materials will allow residents and staff to observe essential social distancing rules by parking in alternate parking bays with direct access to containers and to dispose of their waste more quickly.
  • Opening hours have been extended at those sites open in the first phase to help as many people as possible to pass through each day. Queues are still expected so please be patient.
  • Residents can only bring their waste in cars. No vans, pick-ups or trailers will be allowed into the CRCs during the initial phases of re-opening, this is to limit the amount of waste brought in at any one time.

These site rules apply to all residents visiting any of our CRCs at all times.

CRC Details
Please see each individual community recycling centre (CRC) for details of their addresses, opening hours and what you can and cannot take to them and any restrictions that apply.
