About Our Guest Musician: Tau Wey, Pianist
Born in Taiwan, Tau subsequently lived in Germany and then in England. After reading music at Cambridge, he studied with Yonty Solomon and Douglas Finch at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, and with Jacob Lateiner at Mannes College of Music in New York.
He was awarded First Prize in the Beethoven Piano Society of Europe Competition.
He gave his London debut solo recital at Blackheath Halls in 2006 and his overseas debut at the Music Forum in Taipei the following year. He has made appearances on Radio 3, at the Aldeburgh Festival and at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the BBC Proms season.
Tau is currently Head of Keyboard at Sevenoaks School and a piano tutor on the Kent International Piano Course.
After entertaining us in 2013 as a part of a two-piano duo, he pays a return visit to Esher, this time in a solo capacity, and the core of his programme will be the ever popular ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ by Mussorgsky

Programme For Tau Wey’s Concert
Ravel’s Pavane pour une infante défunte also has a double life as an orchestral piece. It is a beautifully evocative dance in the neo-classical style, and inspired by a picture of a little dancing princess by Velazquez.
Ginastera was one of the most important Argentine composers. The Danzas Argentinas, though they do not relate to pictures and have not been orchestrated, are wonderfully descriptive pieces ideally written for the virtuosic medium of the piano.
