Movie Screened At Walton & Weybridge Film Society – Manchester by the Sea
Wednesday January 23rd 2019: 8pm
Manchester by the Sea
Film Synopsis
This is Kenneth Lonergan’s intricate, understated and devastating portrait of a blue-collar community haunted by tragedy, Set and partly shot in the Massachusetts
coastal community, it is a family narrative. Its central character is Lee Chandler, a janitor working in an apartment building but also glimpsed in the opening shot in what proves to be a flashback, happily sailing on a boat with his brother Joe and Joe’s son Patrick.
In a narrative punctured by flashbacks, Lee is summoned back to his hometown where Joe has died and where Lee is a figure of notoriety for shocking reasons revealed later in the film. Yet you have a sense of life going on around him regardless of his insuperable sadness.
This is an award-winning performance from Casey Affleck.
The film ends on the water where it began showing us that even a no-hoper can have some days which are better than others.

This was the first film distributed or co-distributed by a streaming service, in this case, Amazon, which was awarded an Oscar nomination for Best Picture.
About Our Film Society
Walton and Weybridge Film Society meet at roughly three-weekly intervals on Wednesday evenings, commencing at 8pm at the Cecil Hepworth Playhouse, Hurst Grove (off Hepworth Way), Walton-on-Thames to watch well regarded (mostly recent) films that have probably not been shown in our local cinemas. The programme for this season is listed in the application form (see below).
The venue is owned by Elmbridge Council and used mainly by amateur dramatic societies but it is also very suitable for film shows, with tiered seating and the usual amenities.
Refreshments are provided without charge in a side room after each show and film club members are invited to discuss their reactions to the movie with the Committee and other members.
If you live in Walton or Weybridge or close to this area (for example Hersham, Shepperton, Cobham, Esher), why not join us?
If you would like to join our Film Society, please print off This Application Form and mention the All About Weybridge website.
