About Phoenix Folk & Square Dance Club

We are a friendly and informal English Folk Dance Club based in Oatlands Village, between Weybridge and Walton-on-Thames. We have a varied programme, with visiting Callers and occasional Musicians, covering everything from modern American Contras and Squares to 18th century Playford Dances.

The club meets every Thursday at 8pm, except during Easter, August and Christmas.

Our events include an annual Dinner Dance, as shown in the photos on this page.

We are a friendly and informal English Folk Dance Club based in Oatlands Village, between Weybridge and Walton-on-Thames

Folk dancing is low impact exercise and you can walk or skip to music. We welcome individuals or couples, beginners or experienced dancers.

Each week we dance to a different caller. No Experience necessary as all dances are walked through with clear instructions given from the caller.

We start at 8pm and finish at 10.15pm.

History Of The Club

The Dance club was officially formed on the 18 December 1951 following an informal meeting on the 11 December 1951 where it was agreed to meet once a week for the purpose of folk dancing. The name being agreed as “Phoenix Folk Dance Club”. The name of the club changed to “Phoenix Folk and Square Dance Club” on 7 February 1955.

The first weekly meeting taking place in January 1952 in a room over Barnes Shop, Weybridge. The numbers attending the club grew such that on the 28th February 1952 the club moved to “St. Mary’s Church Hall” Oatlands, now called “Oatlands Village Hall” where it has remained ever since.

The club gave demonstrations of folk and square dancing throughout the area and indeed took part in the Queens Coronation celebrations together with being part of the dancing display at the Royal Albert Hall on National Folk Day.
