Why should you learn Self-Defence?
In my opinion everyone should learn a form of Self-Defence from your teenage years and throughout your adult life because sometimes we have to deal with unpleasant members of our society who wish to steal or cause us harm for no reason whatsoever. This is the sad reality of the world we live in. We also need to learn these essential skills to be able to help others who are in need and there is no one else around to rely on.
There are many examples each and every day of physical situations which called for a level of Self-Defence to avoid harm and injury. No one needs to be a victim.
As well as the practical aspects of WingChun, learning this Martial Art will benefit you in many ways both mentally and physically.
What is WingChun?
WingChun is a self-defence system. Contrary to expectations, the WingChun fighter actually attacks in self-defence. From day one WingChun Students learn a highly developed strategy and approach, with which they can control all conceivable attacks, and it is thus insignificant in what manner or how strongly an opponent attacks.
WingChun trains for every possibility that could possibly happen during a real defence situation. The simultaneous deployment and functioning of the hands, arms and legs are practiced within the framework of organized combat programs, even at the elementary level. The employment of the eyes and quick “reading” of the opponent is also a fundamental part of the WingChun lesson.
There are no physical requirements to begin learning WingChun and is open to all adults regardless of gender. WingChun will also be very beneficial to other experienced Martial Arts that are either active in other WingChun organisations and wish to expand their knowledge or are practicing a completely different art and wish to expand their repertoire of fighting skills.
What are the benefits of WingChun?
There are many benefits to training WingChun, some choose it for the self-defence skills, some for the strength and others for the stress relief it provides.
Here are some more reasons to begin training;
- Learn practical self-defence skills
- Build confidence
- Improve coordination
- Gain body strength
- Improve fitness levels
- Relieve day-to-day stress
Greg Willis – Chief WingChun instructor for the UK
My name is Greg Willis and I am the chief instructor of WingChun in the UK. I have been diligently leading my own academies since April 2011 including the WingChun Chertsey academy which opened August 2023. My passion for Martial Arts began with TaeKwon-Do – ITF in 1995 where I gained my 1st Dan Black Belt in 2001 under the instruction of Umesh Vijapura.
In 2003 left the ITF and began training a new martial art, Wing Tsun under the wider European Wing Tsun Organisation group. These were great building blocks for me into the world of wing chun and it wasn’t until 2007 when I found the most complete and formidable systems of WingChun which was created by Grandmaster Sifu Klaus Brand known as The International Academy of WingChun. This style of WingChun was nothing like I had experienced before and I am as passionate about learning and teaching this style of martial art today as I was when I first experienced it.
Since 2007 I have gained a 3rd Technician Grade, an Instructor Grade, a Student level in Escrima (weapons fighting) and jointly lead the IAW-UK with 4 other fellow Head Instructors. Most recently I have been promoted to chief instructor of the IAW, a position granted to me by Dai Sifu Klaus Brand in May 2021.
